GM Emerges From Bankruptcy

It seems that many of the prognosticators were way off on their predictions of when GM would emerge from bankruptcy.  GM the mighty corporation has quickly emerged as the smaller, humbler (we hope) GM Company.  The new GM is now down to 4 brands, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC.  Many people still question why Pontiac was dropped.  It outsold Buick in the US.  The main reason is Buick’s popularity in China.  It is a huge seller there and makes more money than Pontiac.  Many of the best Buicks are manufactured and exclusively sold in China.  GM is also considering changing their blue logo to a green one to give us the illusion that they are a “Green??? company that produces higher mileage, smaller cars.  Jury is still out on that one.

We Americans are all shareholders in this new GM.  We own 60.8% of GM.  The rest is divvied up among the bondholders, the UAW, and the Canadian union.  Wonder if we are eligible to get a corporate discount?

Maximum Bob (Bob Lutz) has been asked to stay on at GM, foregoing his retirement at the age of 77.  Bob was the instrumental in the development of the new Chevy Camaro and Volt.

See the following clip from CBS News for a quick synopsis.

Fort Collins Classic Car Show in Old Town

By Lloyd Frazier

P1010393

It was a gorgeous rocky mountain spring Saturday in Old Town-Fort Collins.  We have seen an unusually wet spring over the last couple of weeks.  So folks were excited to get out and enjoy the warm sunshine.  In fact, I sought out some shade now and again for a little relief from ‘ol Sol.

It is always a joy to go to a classic car show and meet all the awesome people that are there with their car or truck.  There is always an interesting story attached to each and every entry.  I am still amazed how entwined the automobile is in our culture.

I saw some of the same cars from last weeks Good Guys show at The Ranch in Loveland.  It is always nice to see them again in a different setting like beautiful Old Town Fort Collins.  This time, I made it a point to speak to some of the exhibitors and listen to them tell their story of how they came to be here with that great looking old classic.

Here is a 1967 Buick Sportwagon.  It is the same as an Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser, but in Buick form.  I actually do not recall seeing this Buick version during my childhood days.  My step-father used to drive a ‘68 Olds Vista-Cruiser.  It was fun riding in the back and looking up at the tall buildings and bridge structures through those roof mounted windows.  Speaking with the gentleman about how he acquired this car and what he put into it was fascinating.  A true blue car guy or gal will get into great detail about their work.  He told me how he discovered the great looking port holes on the new Buick LaCrosse and decided to order a set and put them on this ‘67.  They are true port holes that actually vent the heat from the engine compartment.  Unlike the clip-on originals that were replaced.  The trim is actually polished aluminum, not chrome.  As wagons go, this is a beaut!

My next stop along the way, I found a couple of great looking old trucks.  One was a ‘46 Dodge that was rebuilt over the course of a couple of years.  The gentleman jokingly told me of how he discovered it and decided that “his daughter wanted it, so he bought it for her.???  Obviously, he bought not only for her but for him as well.  It was apparent, from the good work he put into it, that he enjoyed every minute of its restoration.  I just hope I run into these fellas again so I can here more of their tales of automotive history.

P1010458There are even some stories that tug at your heart strings.  This perfect example of a ‘71 El Camino SS with 350 V8 and 350TH tranny has a sad story to tell.  It was owned and lovingly pampered by a woman’s late husband.  She was selling it.  I could tell it was hard for her to talk about it.  If I had the money, I would have plunked it down right then and there.  This economy has taken its toll on classic car prices as well.  I just hope that she gets the money she is asking for it.  The car is in absolutely perfect condition.  Cragar wheels, BF Goodrich T/A’s, Edelbrock carb, perfect interior, and all for 14K.  Let’s all hope it falls into the hands of a true classic car person so that it can live on to tell it’s personal story.

2009 Car Show Season in Full Swing

By Lloyd Frazier

P1010230 Another car show season is well under way across our great nation.   The Good Guys Colorado Nationals car show in Loveland, CO was a great start to the season for me.  The rumble of those V8’s and the smell of exhaust coming out of those uncorked headers is enough to stir the soul of any car guy or gal.  We arrived on Saturday morning at about 11am.  The line going into The Ranch, an event complex at the Larimer County fair grounds, was long coming off of I-25.  As we were waiting to be ushered in the parking lot, we saw several nice specimens of well shined, high horsepower hot rods driving around.  Just enough of a taste to whet our appetite.  As we rounded the drive into the parking lot, we saw the sea of  vintage cars, trucks and people  IMG_8397 gathering to view the spectacle.  We anxiously paid for our tickets and entered the gates to the extravaganza.  The first section contained row after row of people hocking their wares.  Parts for any vintage car you could think of were neatly placed upon tarps on the ground.  Each part meticulously marked with year and model of car that it came from.  Some of the hard to find parts had a hefty price marked on them as well.  Conversations about cars people grew up with as a kid or were driving on their first date were all mingled together in a symphony of Americana .  The car culture is well ensconced in our society.  It does not matter how much attention the green energy movement gets in our media, it will take another couple of generations before that technology is woven into fond memories.  And even then, you will probably hear very similar experiences.

Most importantly, we saw a plethora of beautifully restored automobiles.  Some that you don’t see at every car show.  So, instead of me babbling on, I posted a few pics out of hundreds I snapped.  Next Saturday, I will be perusing the Fort Collins auto show in Old Town.  Check back for the post.
